Gill: The Next Indian Captain in Line?

The next Indian captain race has narrowed down to Shubman Gill. As of 19 May 2025, he is the most accepted captain in the entire BCCI committee. According to a report in the Times of India, Shubhman Gill will be named captain when the squad for the England tour is announced. Reports are coming that he had a lunch meeting with Head Coach Gambhir that lasted as long as four hours a few days back.

Reports also suggest that he met with the Indian team’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, on 6th May 2025, after the IPL match in Mumbai. With all these reports coming in, it is now well established that Shubman Gill is the man Team India and BCCI are looking for post Rohit Sharma.

“One key reason the BCCI is considering Shubman Gill is his long-term potential. He’s demonstrated strong leadership while captaining Gujarat Titans, who currently sit at the top of the table,” a source told TOI.

Why are all these things happening in the Indian Cricket Team?

These are the results of the announcement from Rohit Sharma to retire immediately from the Test format on 7th May 2025. With his retirement, the discussion for a new Indian captain in the test format sparks. With an average of 35.05 in 32 tests, Shubman Gill has lots of potential and time to take this up. Gill rising ahead of some senior players like Bumrah, Rahul, Jadeja, and Pant has shocked many fans, but selectors are ready to roll the dice.

With the ongoing Indian Premier League session in its final stage, the squad for the Indian test team for the England tour will be announced soon. As Rohit and Virat have retired, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is looking for a fresh opener to open with Jaiswal in the five-match test series. With reports coming, Sai Sudarshan can also join the team as a replacement for Rohit and Shreyas Iyer as a Virat replacement.

Gill is leading the race for the captaincy ahead of Bumrah, Rahul, and Jadeja. Reports say that Bumrah has voluntarily withdrawn his name from the race due to his tight schedule. Rahul, on the other hand, is too aged to start as an Indian Captain. No reports are coming for Jadeja and Pant to be the next heir of captaincy. So, it is clear that it’s just a formality to announce Gill as the next Indian Captain of the test.

“See, for me, Jasprit would have been the obvious choice after Australia,” Shastri said.

“But I don’t want Jasprit to be made captain, and then you lose him as a bowler.”

“I think he (Bumrah) has to take his body one game at a time. He’s coming back now after a serious injury,” Shastri noted.

“He’ll have played IPL cricket, which is four-over cricket. Now will come the test of bowling 10 overs, 15 overs. And the last thing you want is some pressure on his mind being captain as well.”

Ravi Shastri discussed all this in an ICC Review Podcast.

He added, “The little I’ve seen of Shubman looks very interesting. Composed, calm, he has all the qualities,” said Shastri as he commended the temperament of the No.1 ranked batter in the ICC ODI Player Rankings.
